It is well documented that the internal environment plays a significant role in
the quality of life of someone living with dementia. The first edition of Designing
interiors for people with dementia was written by Richard Pollock in 2003 and
updated in 2007 and 2012. This fourth edition includes more detail on how to
achieve suitable interiors for people with dementia, in a practical way. It has
been expanded by Liz Fuggle, an associate of both BPA Architecture and
the Dementia Services Development Centre. The book looks at practical and
aesthetic aspects of interior design, as well as fixtures and fittings, including
building elements such as staircases and window design. It explores the key
principles underpinning designing interiors for people with dementia, with
chapters on building elements, appropriate furniture, fixtures and fittings, as
well as a room-by-room guide. Over 150 photographs have been included,
illustrating good and bad examples of design for people with dementia.
